Can I have drug dependency on Fioricet ?

Unfortunately YES. You can be dependency on Fioricet.

The reason for this is that one of the ingredients in Fioricet is butalbital. Barbiturate have been known to cause dependency if they are used for longer periods of time.

If you use Fioricet for longer periods of time, you may develop dependency to it. Luckily, your doctor can help you discontinue the drug without experiencing withdrawal symptoms by slowly tapering down the drug.

The best way to avoid becoming dependency on Fioricet is to only take the medication as prescribed.

If you start to notice that Fioricet is getting less effective at treating your headaches, talk to your doctor about alternative options.

Can I get addicted to Fioricet?

No, you will not be addicted to Fioricet if you follow the fioricet max dosage instruction.

Because one tablet of fioricet contains 40mg butalbital, the max dosage of fioricet you can take per day is six tablets. It means you can only take 240mg of butalbital per day.

Butalbital (5-allyl-5-isobutylbarbituric acid), is a short to intermediate-acting barbiturate. Barbiturates may be habit-forming. The average daily dose for the barbiturate addict is usually about 1500 mg.

If you are addicted, it means that you have at least taken 37 tablets of fioricet per day. It will kill you by the acetaminophen in the Fioricet. The max dosage of acetaminophen per day is 3000mg.

37 tablet of fioricet will have 12,025 mg of acetaminophen. It is four times of your acetaminophen max dosage and will seriously hurt your liver, heart, and kidney.

Historically, the maximum daily adult dose of acetaminophen is 4 g, with a recommended dosage of 352-650 mg every 4-6 hours or 1 g every 6 hours. In 2012, the FDA suggested, but did not mandate, a maximum daily dose for adults of 3 g, with no more than 650 mg every 6 hours, as needed.

McNeil Consumer Healthcare, which produces the Tylenol brand of acetaminophen, has voluntarily reduced the maximum recommended daily adult dose of its 500 mg tablet product to 3 g and of its regular-strength 325 mg tablet to 3250 mg,

For children younger than 12 years and/or less than 50 kg in weight, the maximum daily dose is 75 mg/kg, with a recommended dosage of 10-15 mg/kg every 4-6 hours as needed and no more than 5 doses per 24-hour period.

Because of absorption differences, weight-based rectal suppository dosing for children is higher, at 15-20 mg/kg per dose, using the same time interval as for oral acetaminophen

Fiorinal a controlled substance but Fioricet is not controlled substance. why ?

Fioricet contains: 325 mg of acetaminophen (APAP), 50 mg of butalbital, and 40 mg of caffeine.

New capsule reformulation of Fioricet contains: 300 mg of acetaminophen (APAP), 50 mg of butalbital, and 40 mg of caffeine.

Fiorinal contains: 325 mg of aspirin (ASA), 50 mg of butalbital, and 40 mg of caffeine.

The only difference between these two is the aspirin in Fiorinal vs acetaminophen in Fioricet.

Exceptions from the scheduling have been made if the drug meets the requirements of section 811(g) (3) (A) of the Controlled Substances Act. The exemption requires that one of the active ingredients be a non-narcotic controlled substance and one of the others be a non-scheduled compound. The potential for abuse is decreased if a sufficient amount of a non-controlled substance (e.g., aspirin or acetaminophen) is added.

According to the FDA, the issue boils down to a specific ratio of aspirin or acetaminophen to butalbital. Fiorinal® is required to have at least 188 mg of aspirin for every 15 mg of butalbital (188:15) to meet CSA exemption.

The ratio needed for Fioricet® is 70 mg of acetaminophen for every 15 mg of butalbital (70:15).

These ratios were based on what the FDA believed were adequate amounts of nonnarcotic to reduce the abuse potential of butalbital.
